482 Visa English Requirements

Which tests the Department of Home Affairs accepts, minimum scores per component, who is exempt, and practical guidance for South African tradespeople navigating this requirement.

A note on visa guidance: RecruitUp Global is a recruitment agency, not a migration agent. All content on this site is for general educational purposes only. For immigration advice or to lodge a visa application, consult a MARA-registered migration agent. RecruitUp specialises in finding and placing qualified South African tradespeople with Australian employers who are ready to sponsor β€” we handle the recruitment side, not the visa lodgement.

Overview

The English Requirement at a Glance

The Core Skills stream of the 482 visa requires applicants to demonstrate minimum English language proficiency before a visa is granted. There are five accepted tests and a short list of exempt nationalities.

The thresholds are set at a relatively accessible level β€” designed to confirm the worker can function in an Australian workplace, not to test academic fluency. For tradespeople who have worked and trained in English throughout their careers, preparation and timing are the main variables, not ability.

Tests must have been sat within 3 years of the visa application date. A valid result already on file when the nomination is approved means no delay at the visa application stage.

Exemptions

Who Is Exempt?

Citizens of the following five countries are automatically exempt from the English language requirement for the 482 visa. South Africa is not on this list.

United Kingdom
United States of America
Canada
New Zealand
Republic of Ireland

South African Applicants

South Africa is not on the automatic exemption list. South African applicants must provide valid English test results as part of their visa application.

However, this is rarely the obstacle it sounds like. South Africa's trade training and apprenticeship system operates in English β€” instruction, safety documentation, and supervisory communication are all in English. Most South African tradespeople score comfortably above the 4.5–5.0 IELTS floor without intensive preparation.

Additional exemptions may apply in specific circumstances (for example, applicants who completed qualifications entirely in English). A registered migration agent can advise on whether any alternative pathway applies to your situation.

Recommendation

Which Test Should South African Tradespeople Use?

IELTSRecommended
  • βœ“ Available at British Council and IDP centres across South Africa
  • βœ“ General Training version is sufficient β€” no need for Academic
  • βœ“ Results in 13 days (paper) or 3–5 days (computer-based)
  • βœ“ Most widely recognised by migration agents and employers
PTE AcademicGood alternative
  • βœ“ Computer-based β€” available at Pearson centres in major SA cities
  • βœ“ Results typically in 2–3 business days (fastest option)
  • βœ“ Useful when you need results quickly during the nomination process
  • βœ“ AI-scored β€” some candidates prefer this format

Bottom line: Either IELTS General Training or PTE Academic is appropriate. Choose whichever you can sit soonest β€” both are fully accepted and the scores are comparable for the 482 requirement.

Timing

When Should Candidates Sit the Test?

As early as possible β€” ideally before a specific employer is involved. Candidates who have a current, valid test result on file can move into the visa application stage immediately once the nomination clears.

Candidates who still need to sit a test at that point are the bottleneck β€” putting an employer's sponsored position on hold while they wait for results.

A valid IELTS or PTE result is good for 3 years from the date the test was sat. There is no downside to doing it early.

βœ“

Before job matching

Sit the test before engaging with any employer β€” ready to move when they are.

βœ“

During employer search

Test booked and underway while RecruitUp is matching you with employers.

βœ—

After nomination is approved

Now you're the bottleneck. The employer is waiting. Don't be here.

From Our Team
β€œSouth African tradespeople who have completed their trade training and worked in industry β€” where instruction, safety documentation, and supervisory communication are in English β€” typically score comfortably above the 4.5–5.0 band floor without intensive preparation. The candidates we see delayed by English requirements are usually those who leave the test to the last moment, not those who genuinely struggle with the language.”

Questions

Common Questions

Do I need IELTS Academic or General Training for the 482 visa?
Either is accepted. IELTS General Training is sufficient for the 482 visa β€” there is no requirement to sit the Academic version.
How long are English test results valid for the 482 visa?
English test results must have been obtained within the 3 years before the visa application is lodged. A result obtained more than 3 years ago cannot be used and the test must be resat.
Is South Africa exempt from the 482 English requirement?
No. South Africa is not on the list of exempt countries (UK, USA, Canada, NZ, and Ireland). South African applicants must provide valid English test results as part of their visa application.
Can I use a test result I obtained for a previous visa application?
Yes, if it is still within the 3-year validity period. There is no requirement for the test to have been sat specifically for the current application β€” only that it is current and meets the minimum score requirements.
What if I don't meet the minimum score on my first attempt?
Resit the test. There is no mandatory waiting period between attempts. If the minimum is not achieved across multiple attempts, the 482 Core Skills pathway remains unavailable until the requirement is met. A migration agent can advise on whether any exemption applies in specific circumstances.
Is OET a good choice for tradespeople?
OET is designed for healthcare workers and is rarely the right choice for a trade occupation. IELTS General Training or PTE Academic are the most practical options for South African tradespeople.
